I've been thinking about this quite a bit. Especially after looking into the 3GX system with GPs and seeing the price of the combo.
Why not just strap my cellphone to a frame and fly that?
If you go down the list of features and what you need and want in a drone, heli, and/or fixed wing. My cell has it all.
Trasmit / receive? Got it. and three different ways to do so.
GPS? Got it
Gyro? Got it. With inversion.
Camera support? Got it. Two internal with external support as well.
Video? Got it. Again two internal with external support as well.
Can control a drone? Ar Parrot did that and there's others as well.
Mapping and traking? Got it... ArDu.
It can handle a flight sim. Did tbat already. So why fly the thing on board?
Mine has a quad core.
As long as there's atower I csn comunicate with it.
Charge it solarly while using it.
Set it up as a client and do sll this including mske phone calls via laptop base station.
Stream video live.
Ad hock to other devices.
The only thing lacking is the onboard app snd a means to plug in whats needed for a multi , or fixed wing to run.
So why hasn't some one done this yet?
What's stopping me is the progra ming knowledge. Or I'd do it myself.
But hasn't anyone else tried or thought about this?
My phone even has a case in case of crashes so, if anyone has the wsy or app... I'll plsy guinea pip with it on a multi or heli.
Its quad core.. upgradable memory... seriouly why hasn't this been done yet?
Ardu?

There's a latency issue flying over WiFi or 3G, also I nearly lost my quad (and phone) because of using my cellphone to take video without turning all the radio's off caused an uncontrolled flyaway, so there are some problems.
To answer my own question. Apparently they (cellphones) can fly. Someone did have the same thought pattern ss I do. It's called the "Flying Android Project".
