Chip on ArduPilot board not in right place

I bought some extra boards and thermopiles recently here on the forum and couldn't understand why the one board wouldn't work properly, then I noticed that one of the chips is not correctly lined up on its pads. Would it have come out of the factory like this?

Unfortunately the board now falls outside of Sparkfun's Returns Policy as it's been powered up and code loaded and thereby is "affected", postage to and from South Africa also will not really be worth it.

I have asked for a replacement board at cost or reduced cost from Sparkfun, but as I didn't buy the board new from them it complicates matters.

How does this happen? Is this human error or machine? Now we don't want want FAA or any blaming it as a human error for issues arising from likes of this :))) now where is my board !?!
  • maybe sparkfun would send you (for free, or discount) the nice desoldering paste stuff, and solder wick. or could probably remove it with a heat gun. not too hard, and fun to fix.

    Graham,

The answer is yes, it came from the factory like that. There were several instances documented on DIY Drones concerning misplacement of that IC on the Ardupilot board. Fortunately it was not a rampant mistake.
