COMPASS INIT ERROR

Hi,

I have been using my quad for FPV for a while now, using mostly Stabilize and Acro modes.

I removed the GPS, 3DR radio and sonar to avoid losing more stuff in case of a crash. :)

Also, I have been using the 2.9.1b firmware, until now that I decided to give it a second chance to 3.0 firmware.

While using 2.9.1b, sometimes when flying without the goggles I switch to Stab Simple mode to take "high altitude" pics or just trying to learn some aggressive moves but I have noticed that the yaw in simple mode tends to shift after some time using simple mode.

To correct this yaw shift in simple mode, I just land, disarm/arm and problem fixed.

I have been thinking about this little issue but keep avoiding working on it until now that I want to use loiter which used to work fine.

While preparing to run the compassmot procedure, I noticed that the mag values came all 0 in the Flight data "status" tab.

So I went to the CLI to run some tests and when I connect to the APM I get this error

==============================

Free RAM: 1813

FW ver: 120

--------------------------------------------

load_all took 1400us

COMPASS INIT ERROR

==============================

Also tried to turn off/on the compass and get the same messsage and when running a test on the compass I get that the board is not healthy

3691049049?profile=originalThen switched back to 2.9.1b firmware and I get the same behavior.

Is the magnetometer dead?

The first time I tried the 3.0 FW I had a problem when switching from stab simple mode to stab, the quad just died in the air, I wonder is that could be the death of the mag?

I didn't check any logs when that happened, just switched the FW back to 2.9.1b and no weird crashes after that.

I see similar posts in the forum but I don't get the datacard error, just the plain COMPASS INIT ERROR.

The quad works great in stab and acro modes, but I don't even want to try any assisted mode.

Do you think I should save time and prevent headaches by getting an external mag?

Anything else that you may think it could be causing the mag to fail like this.

I won't say that I haven't crashed because that would be a lie :)

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Tono
