Compass Module with Tilt Compensation - HMC6343

Hi,I am new to this forum, so I apologize if I touch on the topic that was already discussed (however I tried to do the corresponding search on the forum and did not find relevant topics). So, to the point, there is a Compass Module on SparkFun (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8656), which, according to the datasheet (http://www.magneticsensors.com/datasheets/HMC6343.pdf), contains 3-axis magnetometer and 3-axis accelerometer plus the MCU and required logic. Through the provided I2C interface it allows to read the raw sensors' output as well as calculated heading, roll, and pitch values. There was a lot of discussions that accelerometers are very imprecise in the moving aircrafts; at the same time there are articles on the WEB related to Kalman filtering and other ways to implement "data fusion" for the outputs of multiple imprecise sensors to obtain reliable data...So, can this device be used as a single IMU/MMU to provide the input for the control module for an autopilot, or it will still require the standard combination of 3 gyros, complex math to calculate the DCM, etc?Does anybody have experience using this sensor?Thank you,--Alex

No, you'll still need gyros. These things aren't designed to handle inertial forces. They only correct the compass when stationary.
