To control my servos from a computer ground station I'm considering buying the PCTx for $50 (www.endurance-rc.com). Is that a good choice?
Does anyone know what protocol the hitec 2.4Ghz aurora9 uses to transmit over the buddy cord?

No that isn't a good choice. You can just do it with an arduino. Check your toolbox I bet you have one.
The hitec 2.4 GHz aurora 9 uses ppm to transmit over the buddy cord. Other people have done stuff like control their robot with a joystick using ppm over the buddy cord.
