What is the best way to connect a laptop to the aircraft? I have a 2.4 Ghz radio for manual control, but what about sending and receiving waypoints and data from the ground? (Sorry to ask a noob question)

I've heard of the Xbee (I read it in MAKE magazine) but I'm not sure how it works. I have lots of experience with RC components and airframe construction, but I'm new to microcontrollers and the way everything hooks together. Do you just buy two of those Xbee 900s and connect one to the Ardupilot?
