Does mission flying work without GCS?

I've been looking everywhere to try and find out if you have to have a ground control station set up to fly missions. Since the waypoints are sent to the pixhawk through usb and are stored as gps coordinates I didn't think it needed to communicate with the ground while flying, but I haven't been able to get my plane to fly a mission yet.

When I switch to mission mode it just returns home and loiters over me. Btw, I'm using qgroundcontrol on a mac, and there is VERY little documentation. Maybe I'm doing something wrong in the program?
