EM406 A Gps problem

Hi all,I am testing out my new sparkfun EM406A GPS module. I am able to receive the data in NMEA format, in my hyperterminal. It shows the correct latitude, longitude, readings. However after sometime the course heading reading which should be ideally 0 ( since i am not moving the module anywhere) drifts to some random value. Also the speed is not perfectly 0 knots.I am worried about the course heading cause this ll be required when we need to program the navigation code. Is this normal? What i mean is, will the GPS give the correct readings when in motion at high speed only and not when stationary?

    Vinay,

Your EM406A GPS is fine, it is acting quite normally.

What is happening is that, while it is not moving, it does not know that, and it is responding to small variations in longitude and latitude estimates. This will produce a small amount of speed, and a random course heading.

Once you starting moving it at a speed greater than a brisk walking speed, the course heading and speed information will settle down, and are quite suitable for control and navigation.

    Best regards,
