Epileptic motor

Hi all,

One of my stock Arducopter motors began to lose power when flying the other day, and quickly developed a more serious problem. Now when I give it power from an ESC it twitches back and forth, rarely completing a rotation. I suspected bad soldering on the bullet connectors so I pulled off the heatshrink. The soldering varied hugely between the three and so I re-soldered them all, but this did not fix the problem. I wonder if there is a break in a wire where the wires enter the motor, or inside the motor itself. Can I open the motor and check?

  • I fixed it! Delighted by how easy this was. The only minor obstacle was getting the little circlip off to open up the motor. Inside, two of the wires were broken:

I may actually have broken one of those two while opening the motor... Anyway, I just scraped off some enamel, soldered the wires backtogether, brushed on some 'Electrical tape', heat shrinked them, popped
the motor back together and slid the clip on. Works great now!

  • Ok, seems like a broken wire inside the motor. Maybe I hit the motor wire in a crash and strained it.

Is there a way to order a replacement motor (not ness. arducopter stock, just one that works) from the USA?

Or, is it possible to disassemble the motor and try to debug this?

Make sure you don't keep power on it for more than a second or two in that state, or you'll burn out your ESC, too. It's either a bad connection or a broken wire in the motor.
  • check it by measure the resistance with a multimeter
