External + Onboard LEDs Possible?

I added an I2C Splitter and external LED to my 3DR Pixhawk and was very disappointed to discover that the presence of the external LED disables the onboard LED — when the external LED is connected the onboard LED no longer functions.

Does anyone know of a workaround that allows both the onboard LED and external LED to work simultaneously?
