Hi fellow droners,

First of all, I would just like to say thank you to everyone involved in making this fantastic piece of technology possible. The developers as well as the contributing community.

Now on to my issue. My HK AQ-600 frame have been flying like a dream from the very first flight until now. That is, 30+ flights in total. This is with 0 previous experience with RC and multicopters (very much thanks to this community). I think this is simply fantastic!

However, yesterday I ended up crashing it into the lake, after flying a 20ish waypoint mission. When switching from auto(loitering on last wp) to loiter and further into RTL, the quad started to rotate. I flipped back and forth between stabilize and RTL trying to rescue the flying lawn mower, to no avail.

My take on this is that one engine started to fail and this is the reason for the crash. However, I don't know how to confirm this from the logs, or if it's even possible given the log level I have activated. 

If anyone in this forum would like to have a look at my logs in order to find some clues, I'd be very happy. If not, I just wanted to contribute with this story to the community.

I got everything captured with my GoPro. I'll post a link to it later on.

Oh, I'm using APM 2.5, UBLOX GPS with 2.9.1b

    Raising the throttle in a VRS should solve the stability problem very fast. I've never seen the opposite.

    Seems like you have a faulty motor bearing - we can here that in the video. It seems as well that your machine has a woobling problem, probably caused by non optimal PID settings.

    This is probably this latest problem that did cause the crash.

    The logs show that throttle and motors where at their max but the copter was still descending. Pitch, Roll and Yaw where out of control.

    Certainly a VRS (vortex ring state) crash promoted by a low battery condition. The copter did not had enough power to go out of this VRS.

    We can see as well a fairly high amount of vibrations. What about the wind during this flight ?

    A bit of friendly advice. "Flipping back and forth" between modes when the copter is in trouble, most likely does more harm then good. When in trouble, activate the mode you think are best suited for the situation and you skill level and stick with it to give the copter a chance to recover.

    Many experienced pilots will switch to manual the moment something feels wrong, and they prevent a lot of crashes that way since it is often just matter of seconds from sensing a problem to hitting the ground. So if you are in this for the long run, I strongly recommend practicing and mastering manual flight. It is the best money saver you can get.

  • Sorry to hear about your event but 30+ flights is pretty good for having no RC experience prior.

    Were you able to retrieve the aircraft?
