Is it required to flash the ESC on a quad?
I know it gives better results, but would a quad still fly?
I'm afraid of losing the esc.

It depends on the ESC but most will work out of the box. Turn off soft start and set the cut off voltage as low as possible (these are usually defaults anyway).
Hi Brain, I m also trying to flash my ESC FMT-20A . It is better to get an EXTRA ESC for the test or replacement purpose.
So get the new one :D
