Just to first give some background... I have been using APM for about 2.5 years on copter but haven't used it on plane for about two years - so I have a decent sense about how to set up an autopilot... however, I am stumped on this one. So I am setting up arduplane 3.01 and the swtiches are set and show up when I go to the config. I can watch the modes change in the config interface of APM planner. That said, when I first plug in my plane it automatically goes to FBW-B even though it is in manual mode and will not leave that mode unless I change it from the APM Planner page. I get no response from the switches except hen I go to Config/Tuning or to Initial setup. Also when I turn off the TX the plane correctly goes into circle then RTL but I cannot take it out of that mode and go back to manual except by changing from the "Flight Data" page.
Does Arduplane behave differently than Arducopter? Am I just missing a simple setting?

Thank you @MarkM and @iskess That worked perfectly. Saved me another couple of hours of trying to make this work.
Hi iskess,
I am not sure I understand what you mean. I have the mode change pugged into channel 5 and when I flip the switches I see the modes change in the "initial config page" So the Ardupilot sees the changes, but the modes dont seem to take on the APM
I think he means that the channel from the transmitter used for mode changing must go into channel 8 on the APM for Arduplane.
