Getting started with Arduino?

What's a nice starter kit for getting into Arduino programming? I'm looking for something that can get me going as I figure out more, and that includes enough components "in the box" so I can blink an LED, etc.

Will I need anything extra to control a servo? I'd like to try generating my own PWM signal for the learning experience, but are there any better ways for "real" servo control?

Many TIA!

My background: experienced programmer, advanced beginner at electronics -- I can cleanly solder wires and connectors to an ESC, but I've never soldered a chip onto a board.
