I would like to know if changing the axis of the normal gimbal controllers will work. Here is just a quick mock up of the question. Would the maths change for the state space model or not? I've got this inkling that it might but I am not certain and a bit too lazy to do the actual math...

It works fine.
Be aware of which conditions result in gimbal lock and avoid them.
