GPS only works when connected with usb and 3DR

My GPS only works when connected with USB cable to PC or when using 3DR wireless telemtry. If I dont use these 2 methods the blue connect led blinks for ever. When connected with USB I get 5 GPS satellites indicated in mission planner with in a few seconds. Any ideas ? I have had this problem since day one.

We need a bit more information:
- APM version?
- Which GPS are you using?
- How is the system/APM powered?
On the surface it sounds like a Vcc power supply issue but...
