Just a heads up- literally! My custom quad flies beautifully so far! First flight went great- nice and steady ten feet off the ground and perfectly responsive. Then one of the prop adapters came off and the quad tumbled to the ground. No major breakage- just props and motor attachments- I'll be flying again tomorrow. The fiberglass frame is untouched and the electronics are very safe inside. Thank you to all who contributed. I am only flying my quad because of all of you and the info you share so freely.
Build Details: Hollow custom built fiberglass frame, APM1.4 running AC2.1 firmware, turnigy 9x radio set, 28/30mm 240w motors, 4S 5000mAh battery, turnigy plush 18a ESC's.
Thanks Again, Eric :)

Well, fight number two went even better longer and smoother than flight number one. Ascended to about fifty feet and toggled to ALT-HOLD mode and all was smooth. However the second flight ended the same way- nasty crash. The problem lies in the prop adapters. Crash one the entire adapter came off the motor shaft. Crash two was because the prop loosened in the adapter. Frame cracked badly but protected everything inside- all the electronics are safe and happy. Its going to be another month or more til I can get it flying again- need to build a new frame, replace a motor or two, and reassemble. Watch your hardware!! Everything was going great until the adapters failed. Again.
