I've installed APM into a hawksky. The APM is in the hatch above the battery. My power up procedure is:
1. remove the APM board
2. attach power to the battery
3. attach the APM board, making sure it and the plane are level
How much time do I have between steps 2 and 3?
Is there an easy way to see if I've got it right or wrong?

check the lights on the board. If its solid amber its good to go (the IMU that is still have to wait for GPS lock).
Mine takes no more than 10 seconds to fully calibrate.
