How to config frame type in ardupilot code?

I'm learning the code of ardupilot, but I don't know how to change frame type to "quad". In APM_Config.h file, I see "If you used to define your CONFIG_APM_HARDWARE setting here, it is no longer valid! You should switch to using a HAL_BOARD flag in your local config.mk.", what does it mean? can anyone help me ? Thanks
