How to program the FrSky Taranis for APM 6ch?

HI guys,

until now I used to have a TH9x and set up a 3-way switch + 2-way switch for the flight modes.

But how can I do that with the Taranis and two 3-way switches (SC + SD) ?

Anybody done that and can help me?

(I know there are some videos on youtube. But they are very strange, they don't use two switches. Instead just one for 3 options and a single 2-way for RTH on/off. strange.)

    CUSTOM SWITCHES

    CS1 AND SC_UP --- SD_UP STAB
    CS2 AND SC_MD --- SD_UP LOITER
    CS3 AND SC_DN --- SD_UP ACRO
    CS4 AND SC_DN --- SD_MD DRIFT
    CS5 AND SC_MD --- SD_MD AUTO
    CS6 AND SC_UP --- SD_MD RTL
    CS7 AND --- --- SD_DN LAND (Delay 0.5)

CH7 on APM will override other modes allowing it to work with SC in any position.(ideal for RTL, though I have set it to land.) The delay was necessary, but possibly could be shortened.

    • I understand your initial frustration CyberCrash. Previously flying with a Dx6i, I was overwhelmed by the complexity of the Taranis at first. After a few months of playing around, I find myself wanting more switches.

Initially I had set SA as 3pos. and used SB as only 2pos. With ch7 on SF. Moving ch7(or ch8) to SB_DN gives me an extra switch.

Without the delay, switching from SB_MD to SB_DN will trigger ch7 but changing from SB_UP to SB_DN would not register ch7. Always returned correct mode for SB_MD. The 0.5sec. delay Solved this problem. I assume that ch7&8 are handled differently by APM when used as flight modes.

A word of caution on this setup if using ch7 for something other than flight modes. Wouldn't want to trigger RTL(SB_MD) every time you try to take a pic or start AutoTUNE with SB_DN.

Test all switch combinations while connected to GCS before you fly.

      • haha,

you lost me at: Initially I had set .....      ;-)

  • Presumably you could follow this guide and make necessary changes for APM.

  • I attached my taranis setup file.  Companion 9xr should be able to load it.  I am using SA and SB to select flight modes with SF as an overriding RTL mode.  I am also sending the output through channel 5.  I know you are interested in using SC, SD, and channel 6 but it shouldn't be too much trouble to transfer the settings over. I have it set up so that there will always be a flight mode so the unused/excessive third toggle will not cause a problem.

SA is the parent switch of SB.

With SA up, SB will toggle between stabilize, alt hold, and loiter.

With SA middle, SB will toggle between Auto, AutoLand, and stabilize.

With SA down, SB will act the same as when SA is up.

SF will always result in RTL regardless of other switch settings.

I also have a few additional features programmed.

S1 knob adjusts CH6 for PID tuning or other misc tuning.

SG toggles aileron and elevator between linear and exponential rates and while in exponential, S2 knob changes the exp curve settings.

I also changed the "Welcome to Taranis" sound to what I always thought it should be, "Welcome to Tyranus". lol  =)

    • Hello bblatter,

      thank you so much.

I tried to understand how the configuration works, but I can't figure it out completly.

Would you help me and explain the windows?
