Since we now have DCM available as well as Z sensors we can effectively integrate the Z sensor with the rest of the IMU, this should help with the UP/DOWN orientation as that can be measured accurately with the Thermopile.Any issues with this?

Could be a standby and test reference of x,y,z to autopilot, data sent to DCM, but only used if specific errors are detected in 6DF IMU data or total loss of IMU, the extra weight may be worth it. IR reference could also be used to check IMU data integrity to an extent of IR accuracy.
Well that is the one question, by integrating the Z sensor into DCM, will it assist with canceling the drift and help to improve the tuning of the other PID loops?
Hmm. I hadn't considered that (keeping a thermopile with the IMU), but I suppose you're right. Is being upside down and not knowing it a big problem with IMU-flown aircraft?
