Is an M shaped airframe design possible?

If weight was mainly centred and the only weight on the arms were the wires to the Motors would am M shaped frame be possible? There would likely be some flex in the lower (in the diagram) arms and maybe a brace back to the centre would be needed parallel to the bottom of the centre board but I wonder if anyone has actually done this?

  • See below my H-frame, maybe this help.

It is flying well and is stable. The rigidity is the key fro the frame, I did need to add one more layer of balsa and now is strong.

  • Ahaa! John, I could not see the wood for the trees! Of course, the H frame would be a perfect solution to achieving what I am setting out to do which is essentially to have as much free space between the arms going all the way back to the centre board.

    *Yes I feel suitably silly*

  • Thanks for your reply. Maybe I should have explained the reasons for such a 'retardation' but thought that unnecessary given the simple and direct question. I agree the weight may have to increase due to the joint at the the top two rotors having to be structurally sound and having to balance that added structure at the bottom rotors. I was just curious if anyone had experimented with this sort of design? Maybe I am the first, and the last!  Degradation in performance is not a desired outcome, is this something you specialize in?

  • If the frame is rigid enough it doesn't matter how retarded the design is.

The "M" design would be much weaker and weigh more than a standard design, but no real reason you couldn't do it.  If you're looking for poor performance there's easier ways though.
