Hi,
My dog thought my PX4 was delicious and chewed my IO board (he immediately regreted and gave it back to me in two pieces though...).
It's hard to find the IO board at the moment (I'm in the Netherlands) and I'm thinking of using the FMU itself without the IO board and it seems possible when I checked the pins of the FMU https://pixhawk.ethz.ch/px4/modules/px4fmu
There is UART5 for telemetry, and 4 servo pins for the motors. However I'm not sure whether APM support these pins. Does anyone know about it?
Thanks!

It is technically possible to get away without using the IO board. It requires a bit of soldering for the RC connectors you've found.
The only caveat is that there's only 4 RC outputs on the FMU board, so your plane/copter can't have more than 4 motors/servos. Thus hexacopters/octocopter can't be used.
