At just a few dollars for an ATmega chip, is there any sense to keeping the IMU seperate from all the stabalisation and navigation processing? Even keep it a separate board like the ArduIMU for ease of positioning at the optimum location. The new ATmega1280 chip of course has all the necessary UART interfaces to allow serial comms to a GPS, IMU and Ground Station. It just feels like a module design could be the way to go.

You're referring to the ArduPilot Mega design? Yes, we may retain a modular approach, with a separate atmega for the IMU. We're wringing about as much as we can out of these chips, and if we're going to stay with the Arduino roadmap, dual-core boards may be the way to go as we add more functionality.
