Is minimOSD necessary for Mission Planner?

Hi there
First off, I'm sorry for what seems to be such a basic question but I'm really struggling to understand whether an OSD is needed to get live video feed into Mission Planner. The reason I need to know is that for a project we have been given a budget and I cannot afford to by non-essential items. For my university project I need the UAS to, as a minimum, report continually to a base station its current location (superimposed on a map), battery level and live video feed.
The way I understand it is that the telemetry data needs to be sent back to the ground station via a telemetry transmitter (and Mission Planner should display this on the map). I have seen many video set-ups using a minimOSD which is described as "all you need to get OSD telemetry data from ArduPilot Mega". Does this mean it is the only way to get live video feed through the APM: Mission Planner?
Any information or links to other descriptions would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Clive
