Joystick / gamepad vs R/C radio

Hi guys...

New to this...

Have installed the 3DR telemetry radios, and am looking at the possibility of using a joystick for telemetry control.

First...

What's the general thoughts about the pros and cons of joystick/gamepad vs R/C radio?

And I assume I arm the hex with the R/C radio, and then add throttle via the joystick and just start flying via the joystick?  What about landing?  Any need to grab the R/C radio?

I have looked at this page:

https://code.google.com/p/ardupilot-mega/wiki/Joystick

but it doesn't say how to actually USE the joystick.

Also...

After looking thru the threads, a couple points were made:

1)  There is a 1/2 second delay in a command sent from a joystick as compared to an R/C radio...is this still true?  (That thread was a little old.)

2)  R/C radios have a much higher "resolution" than a joystick.  The post made it sound like this could be a problem?  Is this true?  And in any case, Thrustmaster has a joystick that uses "hall effect" magnetic sensors for 256 times greater resolution than "normal" joysticks:

So would that solve the problem, if it even exists?

Finally...

Anyone have a recommendation for a particular joystick that works really well?

I used to own a couple joysticks, but they all disappeared, so I am looking at the purchase of a new one, and this Thrustmaster (about $45) looks nicely made (does not have the "hall effect" sensors):

Thanks!

  • Should have mentioned I am flying an hexacopter, if that makes any difference.
