Lipo Batteries: flying time and discharge rate help

Im confused if I have to buy lipos with high or low C value

somewhere I read (maybe hobbyking website) that lower value like 20C are good for slow but long flying time, like for aerial photography in my case

is this true?

also i read somewhere that the phantom who claim to have 20-25 minuts flight uses low C batteries..

bottom line:

I have a quad with 4x 800kv / 11 props fully equipped an it weighs almost 2kg.

theoretically with the best battery ever which is the longest flying time i can get?

thanks

  • The C rating you refer to is the maximum discharge rate the battery can safely handle without damage.

    So if you  fly a 2200mAh 3S Lipo rated at 20C your hardware can constantly draw draw 20 times 2.2Ah (2.2 x 20 = 44A) without damage.

So if you find that your hardware draws more than that, you need to either fly , lets 35C (2.2 x 35 = 77A) of you need to go for something like 5000mAh 20C (5 x 20 = 100A)

For longer flight times you therefor need to use more efficient motors that uses less charge.

The comments above are very high level and there are many things that influence flight times.

You will have to do the math on your own system and read up about the your hardware specs and power usage as well as how Lipos work in order to understand the relationship between voltage, current, capacity and flight times.

Flight times are very difficult to predict or calculate since there are so many variables.

I know I did not really answer the question but it's more complicated that just "do I go with high or low C lipos"
