I wrote a basic puller, and can get data from the quad, but need the send to and received data strings.

On ArduCopter wiki you can find Serial Commands page http://code.google.com/p/arducopter/wiki/Quad_Serial_Commands
Commands should be rather accurate, you can also take a quick look on NG code's GCS.pde file.
I am hoping to find the following:
Send and "S"... What do you get in return
