A product that advertises its range without specifying the type of antenna used could have either outstanding performance or very poor performance.
I've achieved 10km with my XBee kit in the right conditions and with the right equipment, but out of the box, some people can only achieve a few hundred meters.
It doesn't state its actual output power in mW so it would be difficult to gauge its real range in real world conditions.
Stump up the extra money for an Xbee and then you only have to buy it once :)
