I am new to this and just soldered up the boards including oil pan.
I bought a magnetometer as well but as yet have not added this.
Connected the system to my PC along with mission planner software and found it seemed to have already compass direction on board??? Am I missing something? It seems to have this feature already although it reads north when pointing south based on the forward arrow on the board?

The z gyro will give relative directional data, but not absolute (it doesn't know north from south). Also, it drifts over time unless it is correct by an absolute data source such as the GPS (while in forward motion) or the magnetometer.
