mechanical design of quadrotor

hey guys for my project i am supposed 2 build a quadrotor...i am assigned the mechanical aspect of designing the frame ...the specifications that we are looking for the rotorcraft are as follows:total weight of abt 1 kgpayload weight (additional ) 500gmsceiling of about 100mthe frame is not going to be handcrafted but is going to be done on cnc's with no glued joints ..but all in one piece..any suggestions for selection for material ...or for that matter in designing it ...

  • after lot of searching i think i will be settling for robbe roxy BLDC..giving me abt 450gms thrust ..used on std mikrokopters ...nw fr a flight time of abt avg 20 mins with payload, adding to a total wt of 1.5kg ,will a 11.1V Li-Po 2500mAh suffice ?
  • You can have it CNC cut from CF sheets, they are outrageously stiff, light and they're getting cheaper by the minute.

To avoid bending under load and to add a couple artificial break points (that just snap open on a crash, absorbing energy) you could draw a 3D frame made from 2D elements and have it assembled (dry joints, no glue, like this).

The advantage of this is that it's been done before, there are countless CF frames out there. Both precision cut from sheets and assembled from CF tubing.
  • what about CNC/Molded EPP/EPS foam with a carbon fibre skin?
  • Developer
Design a failure mode to allow shedding of mass, battery mounted with velcro with path for escape during vertical crash, allow quad arms to pivot up at force 20% before breakage, design a multistage shock absorbing landing gear, a carbon 1/2 hoop with foam pads, if you really need a crash proof system you could add a ballistic parachute deployed with CO2 compressed gas.
  • Developer
Cast titanium around silica foam centers like a birds bone. Then cnc to final dimensions, but this has never been done before before. Could use aluminum for entire AF, but for best design I would cnc aluminum parts to join carbon fiber tubes to create a frame, you will need to waste a lot of material to do a single piece AF from any material.
Is "one piece" a true requirement or a desired feature to save labor?
