Mission planner default vehicle mode

I have noticed that sometimes mission planner assumes that I am using a copter when it is not connected to my plane. 

The little icon for the vehicle in the flight data tab briefly switches to a quad copter (before disappearing) and then there is no further indication of what vehicle mode mission planner is in. When you plan a mission, it does not include options for takeoff pitch or a way point for landing because these are not used in copter mode. 

If you connect to the plane or load a plane telemetry log in the flight data tab it will switch back to plane mode

Is there anyway to set the default vehicle type to plane? is there anyway to see/set what mode mission planner is in?

      hahaha you weren't kidding. I clicked it out of curiosity just expecting to see an Easter egg. Why is an important feature like that hidden ?
