Mission Planner "Stopped working" in Vista

I am having trouble getting Mission Planner to work on my laptop--hope someone can help.

Hardware:

    Gateway laptop

Intel Pentium T2060 1.6 GHz processor

    2.0 GB Memory

    32 bit

System:

Vista, freshly re-installed, updates through SP2

    .NET 3.5 SP1

    .NET 4.0 Client Profile

    .NET 4.0 Extended

    Microsoft Security Essentials

    Windows Firewall, Mission Planner unblocked

MP vers 1.2.47 claims to successfully install.  When I launch it, I get the DOS window and the MP version number window, which both disappear after a few seconds.  Next I get the dreaded Windows announcement "Mission Planner has Stopped Working..."

I tried some older versions.  MP version 1.2.38 actually runs, and connects to my APM 2.5, but the flight data window remains blank.

What do I try next?
