What about using a mobile phone instead of the xbee as telemetry? Connect through usb or bluetooth. Then you also get a free camera or video camera as well. Any idea around this?

Search the forum. It has been discussed several times before. It is not my area of interest, so I don't remember much about the discussions. Try the typical phone terms in the search - eg gsm, iphone, etc.
