Hello everyone :)

I am a student in an IT school where mainly learn development. As so I am familiar with different sort of programming language. However I am not really good at electronics and I am not "agile" with manual work (I mean mounting pieces, soldering) :p

I am on a personal project that consist in developing some programs for drones. I am aiming to use image recognition with libraries such as openCV.

For the moment I am learning basics with the sitl, mavproxy, mavlink. I am also looking at DroneAPI.

Recently I looked at the ARDrone. It seems cheaper than the:

and has a good autonomy. It is also full mounted and the camera is included. However it has not got a pixhawk embedded... I have seen on a post that it is possible to add the a px4 card on the ARDrone. This card is sells on 3DRobotics. I imagined it is surely difficult to install this card on the ARDrone.

The https://store.3drobotics.com/products/diy-quad-kit looks interesting too because the documentation is well made and I have seen somme good tutorials to use the droneapi and to setup the pixhawk card.

What are your opinions ? Which one do you suggest me ?

  • You will learn more technically from an open source product like the ardupilot family than a closed one like the ARDrone.
    • In an electronic way or programming one ?
