New ArduCopter Kit

Well I have my new AC from Fahpah in the air. I would just like to make a few comments from my experience so far.

1. I got the full kit, and IMHO it is very good value for money. It is very well packaged and nice and compact in its box and logically packed.

2. The motors are pretty good. Its nice to see a single strand wind instead of the multi strand stuff that most cheap motors have. The air space is not quite as tight as I would prefer, but otherwise the windings are very neat.

3. The frame is well thought out. The arms to not touch in the centre however, which means there is some flex/movement whilst flying.

4. The power distribution board is great! It is well made and makes life a lot easier. Numbering of the motors on the board itself would be nice (next to ESC plug) to aid with trouble shooting.

5. The motor mounts and frame mounts are good. They may be a little light weight in terms of crashing, but they work well.

6. The manual on the wiki unfortunately is still a dogs breakfast with many confusing references (links to aeroquad configurator, which is totally different, references to change APM orientation which are no longer necessary, or work actually, the Alpha code installation guide which doesn't work, references to the APM (plane)stuff which is actually not useful, etc). This is the weakest part of the kit and has taken me longer to get working than building the kit did! (and I had my own APM/OP which I had already built and programmed).

Flying:

The good:
Even in Alpha code this quad is very, very stable. With the Accels callibrated, and the PIDs tweaked a bit, its just great. Out of the box the P values are all too low and need tightening up. It is more stable than my MK V1.3 in the hover, and shows bags of potential. Amazing!

The not so good:
Every now and then the AC will dart off on its own. Randomly, the front will drop and it will recover, then the right side, etc. This isnt good for confidence building in the airframe.
The yaw is very, very weak. Even at nearly twice the stock values it carries on drifting for about a second or so after releasing the sticks. I land my MK in my hand all the time, but I cant see myself doing this with the AC for w while.
I am going to try balancing all the props to see if it helps with the sudden darting.
GPS, AH etc not functional, 3 months and no new software???

So in summary:
Great kit, crap instructions, iffy flight characteristics, great stability, amazing potential!

This is after only 6 flight in my yard so I am sure things will improve with more tuning and balancing..

    Mark,

Many thanks for the feedback, and I agree on the instructions, which are very much a work in progress. Can you help us on that? In particular, where is that page with the link to the AeroQuad Configurator? That's not good.

I'd be happy to give you Wiki access if you'd like to edit/fix elements yourself.

    Best,

    Chris
