New to UAVs

Hey everyone. I'm pretty new to all of this hardware and was looking for some direction:I currently have the following:From udrones.com-Arduplane (Bixler)3dr gps3dr telemetryOSD with FPVBasically everything you can get on udrones for the arduplane.3s/11.1v/45c/3300mAh battery11.1v/15c/1300mAh batteryPanasonic Toughbook 31xt60 connectors (5 pair)usb capture dongle (for the fpv feed)balance charger for the liposspektrum dx5e--------What are your suggestions on putting this all together? This kit came with zero documentation but everything is hooked up and mounted to a little chassis that fits into the bixler. The 3300mAh batt was for the motor as suggested in the small print from udrones.com. I didn't realize that I needed a secondary battery to power the arduino and onboard radio gear.Right now I'm under the assumption that:*I'll need a 12v lipro with an xt60 for the ardupilotMega/osd/camera*The 3300mAh connects into the patch cable (battery monitoring?) before heading to the motor.*I need an idea on what ESC to buy.I've tested the connection to the ardupilot vai USB and the 3dr radio. Everything works fine. The OSD is bugging for an update. This kit didn't come with an FTDI so I'm waiting on that too :(I'm new to this stuff and have a long way to go. This little kit is just a start. If we have success, I'd like to know if anyone is attaching FLiR cameras to their planes. Thanks!

  • There are some good build logs for the Bixler both on diydrones and on YouTube, eg

If you are using the 3dr inline power module then you shouldn't need a second battery to power the apm. My suggestion would be to get the plane trimmed and flying well in 3rd person before you attach all the FPV gear.
As for ESC rating, it depends on your motor and prop-- check out the HobbyKing discussions for the Bixler to get some ideas.

Good luck with your maiden flight!
  • Hi Chad,

Just a quick question: is it true that without the secondary battery attached, the 3DR radio shows a solid red led? I can't get mine to work, but I haven't got a secondary battery attached yet. Where do you recommend mounting this secondary battery? On one of the arms?

    Thanks!
