My name is Ryan, I am 15, and I drift rc cars.
I am looking to build my first UAV for the Outback Challenge 2011,but since I have no experience in RC planes or autopilot stuff, its pretty hard..
Be that as it may, I have got a plan of what I want to build (I would rather build it all now with good stuff, rather than buy cheap things and upgrade later), and I really need help! Oh, and I'd like to keep the cost under $2000 :)
MY CURRENT UAV DESIGN:
-SkyWalker EPO
-ArduPilotMega - (Including IMU Shield, UBlox 5 GPS, Full Two Way Telemetry, Plugged Magnetometer,Airspeed sensor, and USB Cable)
-Payload: Remzibi OSD, Go Pro HD Camera, Custom mounting bracket and Pan/Tilt rig, 5.8ghz 500mw Video Transmitter/Reciever, and Flytech Video Gogles with Head Track.
- 9x6 Master Airscrew prop
-Futuba 10C
- 5000mah Turnigy 25C 4s Lipo OR Nanotech 25-50C
-Bind Plug
-APM Case
Thats so far anyway. I still need to find:
- New brushless system & prop? I am looking at 900kv,and a 45amp esc?
- ArduPilot Sheild V2?
- Return to home?

-best battery for AXN is 1800mAh and 3S (don't forget to check it with your motor)
-I'd suggest simple fpv camera and tx like hobbyking has. cheap and good for a beginning. of course later on you will move to something more professional. but then you can use cheap one on a car =)
-motor should be 2100Kv Outrunner, prop 5x5 inches
-20A ESC would have built-in BEC
-no need for gyros since you will have stabilization on 3 axis with ardupilot
-it is completely your choice, can't advise anything here. as for myself, I've ordered this one (yeah AXN) and it is pretty nice platform for both AP and FPV.
Well thats a good start for getting into things. I would not worry about cameras and all the gubbins until you have flown your airframe. Then start kitting it out. One thing you have not mentioned is your TX, you will need several channels perhaps 6 and more importantly some switches. A three position one is really handy.
