HI guys, new member here; I am just starting out on the road to an all singing all dancing self-built hovering drone; but let’s not run before we can walk; so I would be grateful for your advice on my first project
I see that on DIY drones US they are saying that a Hobbyking Bixler Rc plane is a good place to start; as I don’t have any Esperance flying Rc planes do you agree? And I see that to order it in from the US costs a lot in postage so can you get them over here?
I would love to hear your thoughts

Late entry here, but I just purchased the Bixler today. My previous flying experience was a HobbyZone Super Cub (a starter park-flyer for just over $100 with no ailerons). The Bixler will be the perfect next step for me because it provides ailerons + the opportunity to customize the equipment, including for FPA and UAV. Did you end up with the Bixler?
Thanks guys I will look at the Hobbyking UK store, I’m now wondering if it maybe a better idea to start with a basic Arducopter as I think they are easier to fly; I more want to get into the building and drone aspect of it.

I think it depends on what type of learner you are. If youre the type that can learn by reading then internet forums and a cheap simulator are all you need to learn to take off and fly a plane like a Bixler. I dont think an organized field and an instructor is a requirement but that personal preference. Youre still going to crash and it probably a good idea to buy two planes to start out with. One to learn to fly and fix in basic form and the second to install your APM in once youre more experienced.

Given you have no experiece flying RC planes then you really need to join a club where someone can teach you to fly using a buddy box. There is no point putting any expensive gear into the plane until you you can fly it and this will take many weeks/months - because crash you will. You will need to ask experienced members what RC equipment to buy and learn about Servos, ESC's, Lipo's, Radios, Electronics, Software and many more things. When you have a good knowlege of these then you can start to think about a Drone.
