noob throttle question

Hi all,

I have received my APM2.5 this week and have downloaded MP and had a play. I interfaced to my RC controller in preparation for a flight.

I have set up all the channels as recommended and flicking switches on the radio changes the APM's modes to manual/auto/RTL as expected. Also, in these modes, I can see the control surfaces moving, so almost everything is OK!

But.... in the Config>>Failsafe section I can see that APM does not want to control throttle. It won't bump the throttle and at all times it sits at zero.  I'm in armed mode. Not sure what else to check or enable?

  • Thanks Richard. I took it out and launched in manual. Took it up to a good height and flicked to stabilise. The motor kept going (unlike the ground test) so this must be a safety feature.
  • I am as new to APM as you. I probably know even less. But... I am setting up my first APM in a fixed wing nitro plane and am having a similar issue getting the throttle min, max, and cruise set. It seems like you never know for sure what it's gonna do with the throttle in Auto or RTL modes etc. The only thing that comes to mind is I saw on you tube a guy who was testing out auto take off. The first time he turned it on it went full throttle and took off. Next time he hit auto take off there was a  pause before it did anything. . He tossed it and it didn't throttle up until too late and crashed bad. He commented that it seemed the APM would not [ most times but not always ] apply any throttle until it detected motion. For instance if he ran a bit it would throttle up then he'd let it go. But if it's sitting still... it was iffy what it would do. I have not had time to fly mine yet but have just about given up on the throttle settings on the ground. I don't think there is much more I can do until I get it in the air and just see / test what it does with the thottle. Just my two cents but perhaps you are having a similar issue. Either that or it's one of those hundreds of settings you've been staring at for hours like i have. LOL good luck

  • No it is switching to RTL according to MP. It's a plane not a copter. It will move the ailerons etc correctly but won't automatically apply any throttle, both in RTL and in Auto.

So basically it's not switching to RTL when you turn off your transmitter right?

Is your throttle above zero when you turn off your transmitter?  If you're in stabilize mode with throttle at zero when you turn off the transmitter it will immediately disarm the copter 'cuz it figures you must have been on the ground.  In your bench test switch to stabilize mode, raise the throttle, then turn off your tx and see what happens.
