Obligatory New Guy post

Greetings folks.

Started over at the AeroQuad pages, got hooked on the concept of cool quad rotor craft, came over here, and now I'm hooked for good.

I have the ArduPilotMega board, and the Oilpan is inbound. I've been reading up on concepts and basics trying not to start asking stupid questions, but, here goes:

I see recommendations on specific motors and esc's for quads, but I also see disparaging remarks about the quality of the gear from sites like HobbyKing.  I'd ideally like to buy the motors and esc's locally, perhaps spending a bit more initially for a lower overall failure rate.

Can someone give me a pointer to information about basic motor dimensioning?  As an added level of difficulty, I'm new to the RC game in general.

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Dan if you are not in hurry, around end of the month we should have our ArduCopter specific motors/esc and propellers available. Currently we are waiting our shipments to arrive. If you want to have all parts now, I suggest that you try to get 2830 type 800-1000Kv motors. At least you don't need to do so much tuning on ArduCopter.
  • Hobby King are ok, a bit slow on delivery but otherwise their products work fine. Most of their products have a users comments section that's worth taking the time to read, it can add a lot of hours to the buying process, but in the end it assists making informed decisions and leaning on the experience of others who have bothered to share it.
