Obstacle detecting/obstacle avoiding Quad/drone.

I'm Abdul Razak, New here 
I'm working for a small robotic firm called Novatech Robo ,but I have been working on Quadcopters for quite a while now.
and I plan to make a collision/obstacle avoidance Quad and would require a lot of your help :)

I wanted to know as to how I can put codes that I would make onto APM ?
As I plan to use Ultrasonic and the coding trough another board or the APM board itself if its possible.

any information regarding the same would be really helpful.
