Photogrammetry with 3DR Quad

I'm fairly new to quads and I want to start doing some photogrammetry with the 3DR quad kit I was going to order. I've looked around and been suggested that the Sony Nex 5N would be a good camera but in terms of gimbal mounts I have no idea where to look. I would like a gimbal with a gyro but im not sure how necessary that really is. I have never ordered from 3DR before and it says they are out of stock, anyone have any experience with how long it might be on backorder? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For photogrammetry, you typically don't need a gimbal. A fixed downward facing camera works fine. If you do want to use a gimbal (for 3D scanning, for example), you might try the IRIS+ with the GoPro gimbal. We use the GoPro for most of our photogrammetry and it works amazingly well, for both 2D and 3D.

BTW, the X8M comes with a good camera and software ready to do photogrammetry out of the box.
