Greetings All,
A few questions from a father/son combination. Well mainly son, for his school project he has asked permission to explore the capabilities of using a lidar sensor to prevent a quadcopter from running into obstacles, walls, etc.

I believe that this simple question may yield a very complicated project but I have never seen him so enthusiastic about a science project so we threw caution to the wind and well here we are...

His teacher is aware that this is more complicated project so she has realistic expectations. (he attends a science magnet program, so projects like this are very much encouraged)

Please excuse our basic questions:

He found this article that basically inspired him and woke up his curiosity:

Question 1: Build or Buy Kit? My son is proficientent at building/tinkering. Would it be a good idea to start from scratch or buy a quadcopter KIT? any recommendations? I have some Amazon.com credits that I would like to use towards this purchase if possible?

Question2: He wants to use the lidarlite sensor and then compare it to a couple of other sensors, such as: Infrared Proximity Sensor Long Range - Sharp GP2Y0A02YK0F?
would the Pixhawk allow for him to test different sensors? (sorry if this is a too basic question?)

This is all he has for now. He has 2 months more or less to complete the project...

The more direction that we can give him the better...

Many Thanks!
