Planner Voice in Your Pocket

If you're like me, while you're flying you tend to stick close to your ground station running Mission Planner so you can hear the voice updates.  It's nice to know which waypoint you're currently heading to for example.

Well, it dawned on me yesterday that I should be able to podcast that audio stream to my cell phone so I can hear the updates wherever I am.  I run everything on a Mac (MP in Parallels) so I downloaded Nicecast from Rogue Amoeba, simply started it up, chose System Audio as my Source,  and connected from my cell phone.  It just worked!  I'm sure there's something available for the Windows world too, and I'm sure plenty of people are already doing this.  Sometimes it takes me a while to think of things.

There is a bit of a delay - if you use the public internet connection it's about 6 seconds.  If you use the local network mode it's about 4 seconds.  But I think it's great.  I can wander around my flight area with my transmitter, as far as I want from the GS and I can still hear the updates.

  • BTW, I tried Mixlr too, but the delay was about 12 seconds.
