Positioning of the APM 2.6 (off center?)

Hey all,

i received my brand new APM 2.6 together with the ublox GPS one day ago. Today i wanted to mount the apm to my quad but i am not sure how to do so: There is an arrow pointing into the direction which is forward. My first question is: How importand is the exact angle. Does it affect flying when there is an aberration of one degree or so? Furthermore i did not find any information on the exact position of the apm. Does it need to be centered or can i place it on the left or right side of the centerplate? The last question regards the gps: I know that it has to be placed as far apart from the other electronics as possible. What if i put it one cm from the apm? Will it just affect the precision of the gps / compass or does this not work at all?

thank you very much!

  • My understanding is the APM should be mounted as centered as possible.

As far as the external compass; you want it as far as possible from the esc and power distribution board to avoid interference. I would suggest running compassmot (http://copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/ac_compasssetupupadvanced/) and finding the optimal position - with this you can answer your own question. I attached a photo for you (excuse the wire mess, i'm taking this quad apart today to build a Y6)- my APM is 5cm from power distrib or any ESC, and the gps/compass is 1.5cm from the APM. I receive 6% when running compassmot, which "If it is less than 30% then your compass interference is acceptable".
