Problem Programming the APM

Hi guys. I am trying to program my APM/IMU, but I keep getting this error message:
"avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00
avrdude: stk500_disable(): protocol error, expect=0x14, resp=0x51"

I am using the newest Arduino (0021) and have chosen the Arduino Mega ATMega 1280 as the board and the right COM port, the green light flashes a few times before the error message pops up. I have also tried a few different PCs (XP, Win7 and Mac OS 10.6) with no luck. From what I found out online this is a common error message if you have chosen the wrong board or there is something wrong with the firmware, hopefully I won't need a new bootloader :)

    Which LEDs are supposed to turn on when I turn on the APM? I have only ever seen the one red pwr LED...

    Before you buy anything check the Port details in (Windows) Control Panel - Port x/Properties/Advanced - and make sure that RTS on Close is ticked (details in the manual for the APM !). That should do the trick.
