Hi,
I have a question regarding the ardupilot_quad_rc_diagram.jpg (attached)
The Ardupilot Mega board, doesnt it have the ability to control directly the motors through PWM? why do the motors need to be controlled throught the ESCs? what signal does the board send to the ESCs .. is it a PWM signal?
Thanks!
... and yes, im new to this microcontroller world.

The simple answer is: Too much current (I) is required by the motor.
The APM does not have power components to provide the current a motor needs.
A PWM signal is sent to the ESCs, identical to the type from the RC receiver. It is essentially a pass-through of the RC command with an algorithm applied in the case of a multirotor aircraft.
