Range capabilities

Hello to all DIY Drones members! I'm fairly new to the UAV sphere but am actively working on expanding my knowledge base. Before I shoot with my question, I'd like to congratulate everyone on this amazing mecca of information.

I'd like to ask those of you who are more knowledgeable than I am whether there is a compact method of achieving a stable 50 mile telemetry, control, and video link. If so, what kind of equipment are we looking at both on board of the vehicle and on the ground?

Cheers,

Alex

  • The only way to do this that I can think of that is viable for a private party would be a cellular network connection. at 50 miles you are going to need to have a high vantage point for your transmitter just because of the curvature of the earth and a rain storm between you and the aircraft will likely break your link. Going this far is really getting into the professional area, and is highly illegal in the USA. In any case what you want to do will not be cheap (I would estimate $3000-$5000 minimum)

Because you are new to this I would recommend that for now you just concentrate on operating where you can still see the aircraft, the logistics of a flight this distance are pretty daunting. Your plane would need to be able to cruse for a minimum of 2 hours if you plan to get it back, assuming a 50mph flight speed.
