I've been looking at OpenLRS, and from what I can tell there are multiple options, although I haven't found any module that plugs in the Taranis outside of the Orange one

And Orange isn't good for uber quality stuff, at least for their DSM2 module :)
So
1) are there other modules to consider?
2) what receiver modules should I be looking at? (this is for a plane)
3) do you have a favourite TX/RX antenna combo?

Hi Bill, just to confirm:
1) it's not openlrs compatible, correct?
2) it says Frequency Bands: 868MHz (EU, Russia) / 915MHz (USA, Asia, Australia), so depending on where you live, this may not work as well (915Mhz doesn't go as far as 433Mhz, and in my area 900Mhz is filled with RF crap since it's un unlicensed band whereas 433Mhz requires a license)
3) it seems to only support 12 channels output. OpenLRS can do 16
4) does it support passing telemetry to frsky?
5) does it support passing APM telemetry as serial passthrough?
6) it doesn't seem to support diversity RX modules (2 antennas) with lipo backup and sending a "find me" RF beacon while sounding a local buzzer to find your model in the weeds, like openlrs does
So, I'm not entirely sold :) Am I incorrect on some of those? Are there reviews showing that this works a lot better than openlrsng in a non RF clean environment?

It also supports a MAVLink connection using Bluetooth. Which you can connect a smartphone.
I'd suggest checking the website for answers to your other questions. I don't have one, so can't comment, I just mentioned it since you where looking for options.

Here's what I found
1) Avoid anything called Orange. The Frsky modules have bugs that cause crashes from reports I've had, and the LRS modules also seem to have range and quality issues. This is not a place that's worth saving a few dollars on.
2) Hawkeye modules from http://www.dtfuhf.com/ are good quality and support the creators of openlrsng. No brainer.
"DTF UHF 1-watt Deluxe JR Module TX" is the latest module that just works with Frsky without any rewiring or jumpers to invert signals. The one gotcha is that with some antennas, the signal would cause S1 and S2 to wildly jump to different values. Using a small extension to move the antenna away from the remote a bit, fixes this.

4) The "Brotronics BroversityRx:" is an interesting receiver with backup lipo capability. I wrote down more info on it

5) There is a new Openlsrng replacement called ultimateLRS http://www.itluxembourg.lu/site/ but it may only be for Orange modules for now.
I forgot to add: unless you value a bit of money more than your time and model safety, avoid Orange modules. They have so many potential problems that it's not even funny, and require hardware mods for many functions while the DTF-UHF modules just work out of the box (and have the right inverted signals where you need them, plus direct USB support).
Don't feed the lowest quality chinese clones, in this case, please spend a few dollars more and get quality modules.
